Só em Inglês, please!!

Entrevistaram-me, a mim, o famoso cientista, mas só quis responder em Inglês.
Fica aqui o cru relato:

Q: How in your view could researchers in Europe, of all backgrounds, to come together across borders and contribute actively to key issues?

A: Could be organized as a wide-ranging platform where everyone can make a RRFC (Research Request for Comments) on their research questions, goals and agendas. A peer reviewed journal should be set up from scratch to disseminate, trough portals like google scholar and libraries, the most active RRFCs. Equal footing should be allowed to basic research and applied research. An international panel, with a large expert spectrum (University research, industry research, legal, health, media, defense, …) should grade each RRFC and the top ones get no- red- tape funding.

Q: What in your opinion are the most urgent challenges (eg. economic, social, legal..) for the careers of researchers in Europe? And what could be done at EU level to tackle those challenges?

A: As Europe dwindles into recession and narrow politics, initiatives to boost science careers and activities are most welcome. Society needs jobs and needs science to create more jobs and to ease the associated workplace change trauma. Huge research boosting, science based public works projects should be addressed by the EU. These projects must be large science consumers instead of just large construction materials consumers. A project like the Apollo program comes to mind. We need to develop trans-generational project management capabilities. Failure to do so is not an option.

Q: What could be done to raise the recognition of the crucial role of research and the research profession in society?

A: Mass media involvement is the key to create public awareness of the crucial role of research and the research profession in society. Good story telling is a must, to turn dull archaeologists into Indiana Jones. Young talented researchers should be praised like rock stars are. The business of teen research can be managed like the teen music business. How many garage bands are up to something at this very moment? And how many garage researchers like Steve Jobs? Royalties from mass production should be the driving economic force. Let the young do the research and the elder the business plan.

Q: What is your personal motivation? What potential contribution could you set up?

A: I want my children’s children to have a future in a free world. Without good science no good solutions are at reach. Without solutions, crisis will deepen, jobless societies will become nightmares, food will be scarce and war will be imposed on us. That’s not good. I have hope in a bright future.
We need good projects goals, good project management and perseverance. That’s my point.

Q: A final comment, if any.

A: I’m looking forward to exchange visions and goodwill.
