Costumava sentar-me no bar com os estudantes e, enquanto comia, tentava ouvir as conversas para ver se discutiam algo de interessante, mesmo que fossem apenas umas frases soltas inteligentes. N\u00e3o imaginam a minha surpresa; um dia ouvi uma conversa entre duas raparigas em que uma delas dizia o seguinte: “Para tra\u00e7ares uma linha recta aumentas em cada fila a mesma quantidade. V\u00ea bem, se aumentares de cada vez a mesma quantidade quando se sobe uma fila, obt\u00e9ns uma linha recta”. Isto n\u00e3o \u00e9 mais do que um princ\u00edpio profundo da geometria anal\u00edtica! E \u00e0 medida que decorria a conversa, ficava cada vez mais assombrado. N\u00e3o imaginava que a mente feminina conseguisse compreender a geometria anal\u00edtica.
\nE ela continuou: “Sup\u00f5e que h\u00e1 uma outra linha proveniente do outro lado e queremos saber onde v\u00e3o interceptar-se. \u00c9 simples. Assim, se na linha da direita aumentares duas malhas em cada linha superior e na linha da esquerda aumentares tr\u00eas malhas em cada uma que sobe, e que no \u00ednicio est\u00e3o separadas por 20 malhas, etc…” Estava espantado. Ela ia obter a intercep\u00e7\u00e3o!
\nNo final verifiquei que uma das raparigas estava a explicar \u00e0 outra como tricotar meias de l\u00e3.
\nPortanto, aprendi realmente a li\u00e7\u00e3o: a mente feminina \u00e9 capaz de entender a geometria anal\u00edtica. As pessoas que h\u00e1 anos insistem (perante toda a evid\u00eancia \u00f3bvia em contr\u00e1rio) em que os homens e as mulheres s\u00e3o igualmente aptos para o pensamento racional podem ter algum raz\u00e3o. A dificuldade pode residir apenas no facto de n\u00e3o termos ainda descoberto um modo de comunicar com a mente feminina; assim, se o fizermos de forma correcta, poderemos tirar da\u00ed algum proveito.

I listened to a conversation between two girls, and one was explaining that if you want to make a straight line, you see, you go over a certain number to the right for each row you go up–that is, if you go over each time the same amount when you go up a row, you make a straight line–a deep principle of analytic geometry! It went on. I was rather amazed. I didn’t realize the female mind was capable of understanding analytic geometry.<\/p>\n

She went on and said, “Suppose you have another line coming in from the other side, and you want to figure out where they are going to intersect. Suppose on one line you go over two to the right for every one you go up, and the other line goes over three to the right for every one that it goes up, and they start twenty steps apart,” etc.–I was flabbergasted. She figured out where the intersection was. It turned out that one girl was explaining to the other how to knit argyle socks. I, therefore, did learn a lesson: The female mind is capable of understanding analytic geometry. Those people who have for years been insisting (in the face of all obvious evidence to the contrary) that the male and female are equally capable of rational thought may have something. The difficulty may just be that we have never yet discovered a way to communicate with the female mind.
